As much as we love all the things robotic lawn mowers represent: spending Saturdays with the family, having a perfectly healthy lawn, and being kind to the environment, there’s one hurdle to robotic mower ownership that tends to be a bit of a pain: installing the darn thing.

Now, many strong, able-bodied people say, “Not a problem! I’ll just grab the guide wires and the charging station and I’ll do it myself!”

And to you, we tip our hats. Because look, installing a robotic lawn mower on your property isn’t necessarily difficult, but it can be a long, arduous process, especially for those of you with large lawns.

Luckily, you can let the pros at Autmow handle robotic mower installations for a much smoother process. Keep reading to learn all about it.

How to Install Your Robotic Lawn Mower

When you unbox the robotic lawn mower, you’ll get numerous tools.

Depending on the make and model, you’ll get a charging station. Its job isn’t just to charge the mower. The station also sends signals to the mower when it travels near the boundaries. This tells the mower where it can and cannot mow.

The back of the station has connections for the charging cords. You will need to be strategic as to where you place the station. It needs to be at a close enough distance to a power source. But you also need it to not interfere with whatever else is in your yard, and you need to ensure the mower can easily access it.

The boundaries we mentioned earlier are made with the perimeter wire. The box will come with some tools to help secure the wire into the ground.

However, some brands of robotic lawn mowers may not come with perimeter wire. A mower from a brand like Husqvarna would include one. The Ambrogio L60 Elite doesn’t require perimeter wire — it utilizes sensors and GPS to navigate the lawn, it’s edges, and obstacles.

You’ll need a hammer and pliers for the setup process. If you simply lay the wire flat, something or someone could easily knock it out of alignment. You need to stake it into the ground.

Once you figure out exactly where to lay your wire, you may eventually decide to bury the wire in the ground. This protects the wire from weather and breaks, but can also be a headache if you decide to change things later. Here’s a useful video demonstration.

On top of that, even with all the equipment you need, it’ll take you one full afternoon to set up everything properly.

Why You May Not Want to Install Yourself

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to pass this job off to a professional installer. First of all, not all lawns are created equal. Your neighbor with the small, simple yard might have breezed through his install, but you might have obstacles, trees, hills, or a huge lawn that would mean hours of backbreaking work.

Furthermore, sometimes people tackle the task themselves, just to find that they run into an issue that requires industry insight.

If you want to tackle it yourself, go for it! But for those of you who aren’t so sure and want the peace of mind of knowing the install is 100% correct, a professional installer can come to your home.
