They Do More than Mow: Eco-Friendly Kress and Husqvarna Handheld Lawn Equipment

Huqvarna cordless handheld battery-powered lawn equipment

August 27, 2024

Normally, when you see one of our blogs or videos discussing Husqvarna and Kress, you probably assume we are going to talk about robotic mowers. Of course, that makes sense.

We certainly talk a lot about those lovable little machines. However, we at Autmow try to help people find eco-friendly solutions to all lawn care needs. And both Kress and Husqvarna offer other pretty impressive environmentally-friendly lawn equipment besides just their mowers.

You might be wondering…does that mean that Kress and Husqvarna make autonomous yard tools besides mowers? The answer is no. As you might imagine, autonomous chainsaws may never happen. Autonomous leaf blowers will likely launch soon, thanks to the Yarbo 3-in-1 system. Autonomous weed trimmers are also part of Yarbo’s plans, but no launch date is imminent.

What Kress and Husqvarna do offer are high-quality handheld lawn care tools. Both the Kress equipment and Husqvarna equipment use electric-powered batteries that are just as powerful as gas-powered options but are also eco-friendly and quiet.

Down below, we will describe cordless handheld lawn tools from both Kress and Husqvarna. We will give the most pertinent details, namely the price and the specs.

But before we do that, we need to take a moment to discuss electric handheld lawn tools in general.

Why Use Cordless Handheld Lawn Care Equipment?

As we noted above, there are two main advantages of battery-powered lawn equipment over traditional gas-powered options:

  1. They are much more environmentally-friendly. Gas-powered lawn equipment uses 2-stroke engines, which are regarded as among the worst polluters on the planet. Electric batteries have a much, much smaller carbon footprint.
  2. They are quieter. Those 2-stroke engines also have a reputation for being annoyingly loud. Not only do you get a loud rumbling, but you also often get a high-pitched whine. No one wants that close to their ears. (And it’s no picnic for your neighbors, either!)
  3. They are lighter. Engines and fuel tanks are much heavier than a battery. Simple as that.
  4. They are easier to operate. Gas-powered lawn equipment is typically easy to start. But customers have definitely had nightmare stories of yanking cords all day to no avail, especially with chainsaws. Battery operation is a lot easier: plug in the battery, and you are ready to go. Similarly, battery-powered lawn equipment does not vibrate while it operates, a big advantage over gas-powered models.

But Do They Work Well?

Just as importantly, if not even more importantly, Kress and Husqvarna cordless lawn care equipment works just as well as gas-powered options. After all, a quiet and eco-friendly solution doesn’t mean much if it does the job poorly. Luckily, the Kress and Husqvarna electric handheld options are just as reliable as traditional lawn care equipment.

Take battery-powered string trimmers as just one example. As Consumer Reports points out, the performance scores for battery-powered and gas-powered lawn equipment, on average, were nearly identical, with battery-powered holding a slight edge.

About the only area in which gas-powered lawn equipment has traditionally held a major advantage is in runtime. One tank of gas lasts about twice as long as one fully-charged battery. However, this advantage is disappearing thanks to technology such as the Kress battery that fully charges in only 8 minutes. Besides, the runtime difference may not outweigh the benefits of cordless handheld lawn equipment, especially if you have a few different batteries on hand or if you have a smaller property.

What You Should Look for in a Cordless Lawn Tool

Of course, not all battery-powered lawn equipment is created equally. And of course, different tools will be the right fit for some people and not for others.  So, what are some of the biggest determining factors that help us know that Husqvarna equipment and Kress equipment are high-quality? Or, what are some factors for you to weigh as you decide the model that is the best fit for you?  Here are our top 4:

  1. Power: Some battery-powered lawn equipment is designed for heavy-duty needs (like weed whacking through a jungle or blowing down the 3 pigs’ house). Obviously, a lawn care professional usually gravitates toward that type of equipment. Most homeowners won’t need something quite so powerful. But of course, you need to analyze your property to determine your needs.
  2. Ease of use: As we said above, battery-powered lawn equipment is generally very user-friendly at startup. However, the ability to troubleshoot other aspects quickly makes a big difference. For example, with trimmers, do the strings tend to get tangled? Are they easy to change when the time comes?  Answering these questions will help you avoid frustration once you start using the product.
  3. Battery Life: Generally speaking, of course, the longer battery life you can get from your cordless handheld lawn equipment, the better. After all, you want to avoid running out of juice halfway through the project. Even if you have extra batteries, having to switch out in the middle of your work can be frustrating. So, you want to read some reviews to find out the runtime on models you are considering, finding which ones can cover your property (or at least require the fewest backup batteries). You might also consider a backpack battery. These run much longer, but they are also more expensive.
  4. Value: No matter what, you always want to weigh these other factors vs. the cost of the lawn equipment. Is it worth it to spend an extra $100 to get something that goes far beyond your needs? Probably not. And certainly, if you find two models that have similar scores on the other factors, you always want to get the most “bang for your buck,” so to speak.
