What is a robotic lawn mower?
New technologies mean not all mowers require a wired perimeter/boundary (see section on “Robotic Mower Types”).
Robotic lawn mowers first entered production in 1995 and can now handle several acres if needed. They are meant to be completely autonomous, and some can be integrated into your Home Automation.
What does autonomous mean?
Autonomous is defined as having the freedom to operate itself and has its own controls. Autonomous lawn mowers have the ability to operate and mow lawns on their own with the settings and controls from the operator. Once installed and setup, there is no physical demand needed for the robotic mower to run.
Can I leave the mower unattended?
Can I leave the robotic lawn mower out year-round?
Robotic lawn mowers are designed to operate in all weather conditions with the exceptions of extreme wet and freezing conditions. Once fall and winter hit, your grass will stop growing depending on where you live, in this case it is best to store your mower in your garage. Simply give it a full charge before you put it away for the winter.
What about objects in my yard?
Either wired or wireless installations allow the robotic lawn mower to have no-go/stay out zones set to maneuver around and objects in the lawn without a problem. Robotic lawn mowers also have built-in sensors which keep them from getting stuck on any other unexpected items. A robotic lawn mower is designed to stop its cutting system and redirect if needed.

What maintenance is required?
Unlike most power equipment, a robotic lawn mower rarely requires any maintenance. While inspection and light cleaning is always a good thing to do so that your equipment runs efficiently for a long time, robotic lawn mowers do not require special equipment to keep their blades sharp. These lightweight mowers make it cheap and easy to simply replace the blades periodically and they won’t take up much space in your garage when stored for the winter.

A boundary wire is placed or buried around the edge of your lawn and any obstacles your robotic mower should avoid. This wire is fully customizable so the mower reaches only what it’s supposed to and leaves the rest.
Pros: More choice of brands/models available, no issues with buildings or trees, no issues working in varied lighting conditions.
Cons: Installation is more time consuming, possibility of wire breaks - Random mowing vs systematic mowing
Wired mowers use a Random mowing algorithm, which is based on the time needed to compete cutting a certain size area. The mower will make multiples passes over the same area from different angles, which results in a smooth carpet like result (striping/pattern cutting is not possible). RTK/GNSS and some vision-based mowers have the ability of systematic mowing, where they can mow in stripes or patterns. Systematic mowing is also more efficient – typically being able to mow twice the area of random in the same time. - RTK/GNSS robotic mowers
GNSS RTK stands for Global Navigation Satellite System Real-Time Kinematic. It is a technique used in satellite-based positioning systems to provide highly accurate positioning information in real-time. GNSS is a general term for global navigation satellite systems like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou.
RTK works by using data from a fixed reference station, which continuously transmit corrections for satellite signals based on their known positions. A mobile receiver on the mower can then use this correction data to compute its own precise position relative to the reference station.
Pros: Faster and easier to install and modify than a wired mowers.
Cons: Limitations of poor GPS signal when used heavy tree coverage or taller/metal buildings. - Vision-based robotic mowers
There are multiple approaches to Vision based robotic mowers, some use sensors/cameras to detect boundaries and obstacles while others use cameras to make a virtual map of your lawn and any obstacles.
Pros: Faster and easier to install than a wired mower
Cons: Camera and sensor based system have issue with low light conditions so cannot work at night - RTK with 3D LiDAR SLAM robotic mowers
SLAM stands for simultaneous localization and mapping (sometimes called synchronized localization and mapping). It is the process of mapping an area whilst keeping track of the device’s location within that area. This is what makes mobile mapping possible.
A LiDAR-based SLAM system uses a laser sensor to generate a 3D map of its environment. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) measures the distance to an object by illuminating the object using an active laser “pulse”. These high-precision distance measurements can be used along with GNSS/RTK to fill in the “blind spots” caused by poor GPS reception.
Pros: Faster and easier to install and modify than wired mowers, more reliable than GPS/RTK only systems as it will work in “blind spots” where the GPS signal is bad
Cons: It is still an emerging technology, and no proven/tested mower is currently available

2-Wheel Drive vs All Wheel Drive?
The main advantage of All/4-wheel drive is the ability to operate on steeper slopes/inclines where a 2-wheel drive model might lose traction. All wheel drive models can typically operate up to 70-75% (35-37 degrees) where a 2 wheel drive can operate between 25-45% (14-24 degrees)
Mowers with Edging Capability
Some robotic mowers have better edging capability depending onwheel design and maneuverability. A robotic lawn mower uses a buried wire or a virtual map (depending on mower type) to navigate the edges of your lawn to ensure a clean cut in any area you need mowed. These mowers are designed to overlap the wire to ensure that all of the grass is cut, however you will still need to trim in areas where the grass grows along a wall. This trimming is needed because the robotic mowing blades are recessed from the edge fore safety regulations.
Will a Robotic Mower work for me?
Can I have more than one area or a separate area?
Most robotic mowers and work with multiple areas/zones and some can also work with separated zones. Automow can help you choose the right mower for your needs.
Can they handle hills?
Better than a riding mower. Today’s autonomous mowers can manage slopes up to 45% (24 degrees) and with All wheel drive models up to 70-75% (35-37 degrees).
Can they run in the rain?
Some units have Rain Sensors and will stop work and go back to the charging station when it senses rain (or sprinklers), but some are designed to run in the rain and because of their unique design will also not “tear” wet grass like other mowers.
How do they stay in my yard?
Depending on what model you have, either a boundary wire or “virtual boundary” (with RKT/GNSS models) is installed around the edge of your lawn and any obstacles it should avoid. Both wired or virtual boundaries are fully customizable so the mower reaches only what it’s supposed to and leaves the rest.
What if my lawn is very complex?
No problem. Both RTK/GNSS or wired, remote object sensors and GPS are used to handle even the most demanding lawns.
Will my robotic lawn mower cut the edges?
Some robotic mowers have better edging capability depending on wheel design and maneuverability.

Safety features
Are Robotic Mowers Safe?
- Sensors
- All modern robotic mowers have safety sensor features, including lift/bump sensors. Some also have ultra-sonic or vision sensors to identify and avoid obstacles.
- Anti-Theft
- Most models include an Anti-Theft code which is needed to operate or change settings, these usually have an audible alarm if the mower is moved without entering the code.
- Some models are equipped with Geofence, where you will get notified if you mower exceeds your preset Geofence area and allows you to see where your mower is in the care of theft (certain limitations apply).

Performance
How much do they cost to run?
Running costs depend on a few factors: The size of your lawn, how often you mow your lawn, length of your mowing season. But generally they only use about $20-$75 of electricity per season.
How large an area can a Robotic mower mow?
Most models typically range from 0.25 acre to 1.25 acre, but some RTK/GNSS models will cut up to 2.5 acres (using systematic mowing).
Commercial models can mow up to 18 acres.
How long do they run on one charge?
Mowers typically run 60-90 minutes before returning to their base to charge.
How long do they take to recharge?
On average, most standard units take 60-120 minutes for a full charge.
How long does it take to cut my grass?
Every model is made for different size lawns, so it depends on which one you purchase. All robotic mowers are meant to cut your lawn several times weekly to keep your grass healthier. Some automatic lawn mowers are also faster than others. Other factors include the season, the type of grass on your lawn, and whether the grass is irrigated or treated. Check with your Autmow professional to help you determine which model would best suit your lawn size.
What is the maximum and minimum cutting heights?
Cutting heights vary between different brands and models, and some have standard and high-cut versions, but generally, they can cut as low as 0.8 inches or as high as 4 inches.

If you don’t know your lawn size, there are tools available online to help you:

Does my lawn need to be a certain size?
No – mowers are built for lawns up to 1.25 acres (wireless mowers up to 2.5 acres) and multiple units can maintain larger yards.
Self-installation vs Professional Installation
If you choose our professional installation, we will bury the boundary and other guide wires for you. Our technicians have the experience and know the best way to install your mower on your property.
You can also do this yourself, but many DIY kits include above-ground wire and small stakes designed to grow into your lawn quickly.
What obstacles should be excluded from my lawn?
Clear any debris, toys, sticks, or stones before operation on the lawn. Large obstacles can be made into No-go zones to prevent mowers entering certain areas (swimming pools, flower beds, lawn furniture etc.) – either wired or virtual No-go zones for wireless mowers.

What should I take note of when creating a map?
If you use the remote control option when mapping, ensure that there is a gap of at least 15 cm from the boundary, turning points are at least 90° and that the slopes of boundaries do not exceed 15°.
The boundaries of a map must be at least one meter from lakes and cliffs.
What should I take note of before mowing?
If the grass is too long, use a walk-behind mower to mow the grass to 80 mm or shorter.
Remove any trash or animal waste in the grass before mowing.
Pay attention to children and animals while mowing to avoid any injuries.

What should I do when the container is full?
What should I know about cleaning and maintenance?
To clean BLADE, use a high-pressure water hose to wash the front and rear wheels, as well as the BLADEs. Do not point the high-pressure hose directly at the BLADEs. Wipe the camera and battery compartment with a soft cloth.
When storing BLADE, ensure the battery is fully charged and place it in a well-ventilated place. Charge the battery every six months when not in use.

What is a Separate Zone and how to mow it?
A separate zone is an area the RK cannot reach by itself, due to walls, fences, level difference and conditions where a narrow pass cannot be used. The user carries the robot to this area and manually send it to mow. Once mowing time is complete (Or robot needs recharging), user to carry it back to the base station.

How does it detect objects and obstacles in the lawn?
Robomow detects when there is an obstacle in its way during operation. When the mower collides with an obstacle, the mower will stop the rotation of the blades immediately, and then stop movement in that direction and reverse itself away from the obstacle. Obstacles that are vertical, relatively rigid, and higher than 6in (15cm) do not need to be protected or removed from the lawn.
How does Anti-Theft work?

How long does it take to install Landroid?
Installation time will depend on the size and complexity of your lawn. Just make sure you read the Installation Guide and the Owner’s Manual completely before starting.
For example, if you have a 100m² lawn then it’ll take about 30-60 minutes to complete the installation work, but also depends on your proficiency.

It’s best to write your PIN code down in a safe place or register your Worx Landroid at www.worxlandroid.com and record your PIN code online. This will help you to retrieve your PIN code.
Please note failure to record and remember your PIN code could result in you not being able to use Worx Landroid and could result in additional service charges to make Worx Landroid operational.
WHAT OBJECTS MIGHT LANDROID HAVE DIFFICULTY DETECTING?
1. An object with a height less than the Worx Landroid will not detect 15cm as an obstacle, such as small branches, stones, etc. You should remove them from the territory of Landroid.
2. An object such as a trampoline with a low frame leg height, in this case, you can either isolate the trampoline from the territory of Worx Landroid or place larger obstacles in front so that Worx Landroid can detect it.
3. Something that can be pushed by Landroid, such as inflatable toys. You should remove them from the lawn.
4. Something that Landroid can climb on.
CAN CHILDREN/PETS BE ON LAWN WHEN LANDROID IS MOWING?
No, they can’t. We recommend children and pets are kept away from Worx Landroid when it is mowing.
